Creativity, competence, charisma: These are the cornerstones of his success, as a jazz vocalist and musician, a professor of jazz vocals and improvisation at the state conservatory in Maastricht, or as a guest for Peter Herbolzheimer, Frank Nimsgern and many others.
For the first time, now, Gottschalk shows his brilliance as a solo singer and guitarist. In addition to two of his own compositions, he has made stylish arrangements of classics such as A. C. Jobim's - No More Blues, has filled Joni Mitchell's - Both Sides Now, with new life and casually refined Freddie Hubbard's - Byrdlike, with text.
Performance is the main focus on Solo. Thirteen cuts were recorded as purely as possible and give the album the unmistakable charm of a live performance. Norbert Gottschalk once again reveals himself to be a skilled scat performer and vocalist, whose sensitive timbre underscores the warm character of this excellent production and shows one more facet of this extraordinary artist.
