Jimi Hendrix : BBC Sessions

© Experience Hendrix

BBC Sessions (1998) is a compilation album of recordings by the rock group The Jimi Hendrix Experience, released on MCA Records. It contains tracks from various appearances on BBC radio and television programmes, such as 'Saturday Club' and 'Top Of The Pops', mainly recorded in 1967. At a BBC radio 'session', a practice still alive in British radio today, a band is required to record material quickly, sometimes with limited overdubbing, but largely limited to and relying upon their live sound.

BBC Sessions therefore offers its own unique example of the Experience sound, and a revealing glimpse of their early repertoire, including cover versions of songs such as Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?".

Amongst the extended jams and live versions of well-known Experience songs, notable inclusions are the amusing take on a BBC Radio 1 jingle ("Radio One"), a recording with Stevie Wonder on drums ("I Was Made To Love Her"), and the band's famous appearance on Lulu's television show in 1969.

Rat Review

Most of Hendrix live recordings are from a later period in his short career. The BBC sessions are his best live recordings from the early Experience days. A gem.

Jimi Hendrix : Axis Bold As Love

Electric Guitar / Rock

Axis: Bold as Love is the second album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in 1967 . Following the seminal Are You Experienced, the band delivered another classic, although Axis: Bold As Love is overshadowed by its predecessor and successor (Electric Ladyland). The group, however, undoubtedly sounds more confident and more proficient than it did on its debut.
